Mulberry School, a parent participation school for children from preschool to 5th grade class has a philosophy that is clearly consistent with the teachings of Positive Discipline, as founders Dr. Jane Nelsen, Lynn Lott, and H. Stephen Glenn express in the text: Positive Discipline in the Classroom. Mulberry School provides a unique educational environment which offers rigorous academic preparation along with an emphasis on social and emotional development.
Schools have a critical choice to make in how they perceive and respond to student misbehavior. Traditional practices of discipline often contradict the fundamental mission of education—to engage students in higher learning. The best environment for learning is one which promotes caring, mutually respectful relationships. The dominant response in schools to inappropriate behavior is censure, isolation and punishment which often breeds resentment and rebellion.
Included in the Positive Discipline model, class meetings are held throughout the school to help students learn effective problem solving skills. Behavior is monitored in a systematic manner focusing upon strengths and solutions, responsibility and capability. Parents, who function as teacher aides at Mulberry, also receive extensive training in how to help support students in resolving conflicts. This training also translates into better parenting at home and consistency between home and school.
